Matka Silk is handwoven coarse silk fabric, obtained from waste Mulberry (Bombyx Mori) cocoon without removing its gum. It has the sheen and lustre of Katan Silk. When the silk worm pierces the cocoon and goes out of it, the cocoon gets damaged. This damaged cocoon is then used to make Matka Silk. The name Matka is derived from an old age practice of extracting the filaments of the cocoons of this silk and were originally unwound and plied together on a mud pot, called Matka in the local language of Bihar. Raw material is largely obtained from Karnataka and Kashmir but the weaving in West Bengal state of India. This versatile fabric used in various purpose due to thickness, light weight and lustre. It is used in all-weather both summer and winter. Matka is in huge demand due to its strength, durability and economical pricing.
