Kantha Stitch is an ancient art form that belongs to West Bengol state of India that can be traced back to first and second AD. Kantha work involve complex artistic work done by weavers in the form of running stitch in the form of floral motifs, animals and birds figure and geometrical shapes. Earlier Kantha sarees were used as a drape by women of West Bengol to protect themselves from cold. Today, Kantha embroidery work has become the fashion label in the Indo Western World. Earlier rural women of West Bengol used old sarees and clothes and layer them with kantha stitching to make a light blanket, bedsheet or throw, especially for children. Over a period of time, it has evolved and and have made way on Indian and International Fashion world. Today they can be found on shawls, pillow duppattas nad home furnishing as well besides sarees.
