Maheshwari Sarees derives its name from the town “Maheshwar” located on the banks of river Narmada in the state of Madhya Pradesh from India. These Pure Silk Cotton sarees are hand woven by the artisan clusters in Maheshwar which has been preserved since 5th century. The tale of its origin goes back to 18th century in Holkar Dynasty in Malwa region. Maheshwar was the capital city of Malwa estate and the ruling warrior Queen Ahilyabai Holkar ordered weavers of Maheshwar and Surat to form a team and design a special saree of 9 yards, to be gifted to royal guest and relatives. The first saree was designed by Maharani (Queen) herself.  The sarees have a royal grace and you can see the influence of architecture of Maheshwar towns in its simple yet graceful, lustrous, light weight weaves. Some of the popular designs are Mat or “Chatai”, floral or Chameli ka Phool, which still finds its place in these sarees.
