Description
Kantha Stitch is an ancient art form that belongs to the West Bengal state of India that can be traced back to the first and second AD. Kantha work involves complex artistic work done by weavers in the form of running stitches in the form of floral motifs, animals and birds’ figures and geometrical shapes. Earlier Kantha sarees were used as a drape by women of West Bengal to protect themselves from cold. Today, Kantha embroidery work has become the fashion label in the Indo-Western World. Earlier rural women of West Bengal used old sarees and clothes and layer them with Kantha stitching to make a light blanket, bedsheet or throw, especially for children. Over a period of time, it has evolved and has made its way into the Indian and International Fashion world. Today they can be found on shawls, pillow dupattas and home furnishing as well as sarees.
